Biodiversity of the Po River

Fiume Po

THE PROJECT

The creation of the Nature Positive Network is one of the activities outlined in the Collaboration Agreement signed between the Po River Basin Authority and the Foundation for Sustainable Development, aimed at carrying out research and development to identify strategies and actions that will inform the future drafting of the Po River Basin Biodiversity Plan.

The drafting of this Plan is part of an ongoing effort to protect and restore biodiversity in the Po District through other planning tools, with particular emphasis on water quality. The latter is closely linked to the restoration of the natural hydraulic and morphological processes of water bodies—factors essential for strengthening the riparian ecosystem, thereby laying the groundwork for a genuine improvement in biodiversity and for protecting citizens’ health and well-being from the risks and impacts of climate change.

The institutional work of the River Basin Authority focuses on ecosystem restoration, including through the study and planning of interventions aimed at reducing the artificial nature of the river channel and reactivating its natural processes, maintaining ecological flow, and enhancing wetlands and their role in mitigating climate change.

The Collaboration Agreement calls for the implementation of three activities:

Activity 1 consists of implementing a long-term participatory process that involves the key stakeholders in the Po District, with the aim of defining a shared strategy for enhancing the district’s natural capital. The participants, divided into two working groups, will draft in-depth reports that will be presented at a national conference. The conference will aim to showcase successful examples of ecosystem restoration projects carried out by businesses or through collaboration between public and private entities.

Activity 2 involves conducting an in-depth analysis of the current state of biodiversity conservation in the Po District, and formulating objectives, strategies, and possible courses of action that complement those already identified by other competent authorities. To achieve this goal, the guidelines provided by current planning instruments and original information generated during this process will be utilized, with the support of leading figures from academia and the research community who possess proven expertise regarding the state of biodiversity in the District.

Specific attention will be devoted to the ecosystem services provided by the Po River basin, leading to their identification and classification in relation to different spatial scales, as well as an in-depth analysis of certain aspects of biophysical assessment. Increasing knowledge about the value of the ecosystem services provided by the river system represents a central challenge in the agency’s daily work, not only with regard to planning but also for education and awareness-raising activities involving all stakeholders connected to the sustainable management of water resources.

Activity 3 involves the creation and coordination of the Nature Positive Network, a dynamic network of companies that want to make a difference in Italy by actively committing to the transition of the production system toward a nature-positive economy, through the implementation of effective actions aimed at protecting and enhancing nature.
